Meet the Shadow[] |
5,400 words |
I'm not sure I trust this "Shadow," or whoever they really are. Though I have to admit, they had a really good point about not being the same person I was before. Still, I'm going to check this cave and see if any of my friends made it here with me... as soon as I deal with this creepy crawler.

Talk with Shadow[] |
3,900 words |
I feel a little less alone, thinking about how Suwö would approach this situation. And he'd be right too, that I need to take a step and get going on my journey. I really hope that what the shadow Shadow pointed out is him! If I could survive the Purple Gate, I'm sure he could too!
| |||
Sharpening Stubborn Stones[] |
1,500 words |
I can't believe Suwö is actually here! And I can't believe he thought that I don't need him. Of course I do! The only way we're going to get through this is if we stick together... and he's more than a companion, he's my friend too. Okay... he wants me to beat him in a fight? Fine. I'll do that.

Discuss with Shadow[] |
6,300 words |
I don't understand what's happening here. Suwö was here, and then he wasn't. Shadow was being helpful, and now they're not. They want me to move forward and grow from defeat, but I just want to leave this cave... I guess I'll dance to their tune for a little bit longer. At least until I can find my way out.

It was Like Lightning[] |
1,000 words |
Azadi showed up, just like Suwö did earlier. If I'm not fully myself though, then Azadi is in the same leaky boat as me. He's missing that burning inner fire I saw out at Gansu. I'm not one hundred percent sure what to do to get it back, but he's insisting on a duel... maybe that'll spark his spirit again?
| |||
Speak with Shadow[] |
5,500 words |
I'm starting to see a pattern with Shadow. Every time I talk with them, they send me to fight something, and after I defeat the creature, I'm able to meet with one of my lost companions. Time to go to the river and get started on this new quest.
| |||
Dam the Guilt[] |
500 words |
I was right! After getting covered in slime and defeating some of the water creatures in here, Lodo's appeared! I'm not sure if I'm understanding him correctly, but I think he's feeling like he failed too. He kept talking about weak currents, so I challenged him to battle. I'm not sure if that's what he wanted, but he didn't argue.
| |||
The Final Fight[] |
4,444 words |
I'm in a cave, lost and alone, and I find that the person helping me this entire time has been myself?! How's that possible? And how is this fight going to happen? Isn't this like the Gate, when I was battling my own weaknesses and strengths? Although... being apart from me they probably haven't been studying my most recent lessons.

Side Quests[]
| Quest | Objectives | Rewards | Approximate words needed |

Fishing for sanity (1/2)[] |
7,000 words (if you have the items) |
It hasn't been easy to be so isolated in this cave for so long. I've done what I can to keep myself busy, to keep my mind and body sharp. But time is beginning to take its toll and I fear I may never make it out of here. The other day I found myself floating completely still in the water, feeling the ripples a Letos makes right before it strikes. I'd wait until the last moment to parry the attack. I worry I'm doing this more to feel a sense of danger, of something, than as true battle training.
| |||
Fishing for sanity (2/2)[] |
14,000 words (if you have the items) |
As my Letos fishing continues I came to the conclusion that it doesn't matter if I'm putting myself in danger for the right reasons or not. All that matters it that I find a purpose, any purpose, that I can hold on to. Something that I can aim for, strive for, feel like I'm making progress toward. I can't lose myself in this cave, I must remain a warrior, in training. Besides, I feel like Lodo would be proud of my water training.
| |||
Into the water (1/2)[] |
3,450 words (if you have the items) |
I've checked every crack in the rocks for a way out and still haven't found a way out. So now I must move to the water and see if there is a passage out that way. I'll use mushrooms to lure monsters in and fight my way through, little by little.
| |||
Against the water (2/2)[] |
5,750 words (if you have the items) |
It's been nice to be in the water, a welcomed respite from the cold dirt and stone. I feel waves of water crashing into me as I swim but I still haven't been able to make out where they are coming from. I worry that they're just the waves I'm making bouncing against the walls and back onto me. I worry that everything in this cave is just my own thoughts bouncing back against me.
| |||
Busy Mind & Body (1/2)[] |
900 words (if you have the items) |
I wouldn't call it fishing, but I've learned that if I sit close to the water's edge I can wiggle my finger in the water to lure the Spina in. Close enough to be able to fight it without submerging myself in the cold water. I've trying out different cadences to move my finger to, seeing which one works best. Anything to keep my mind and body busy.
| |||
Busy Mind & Body (2/2)[] |
1,800 words (if you have the items) |
I have a finger lure pattern which works best with the Spina, another skill I didn't know I'd develop as a Dust Warrior. Definitely not something they teach in Luciola Forest. On this great journey I've learned so much and continue to do so each day. Which is why experience is so prized among warriors. There are certain things you can only learn by being in the arena, fighting, repeatedly. One finger wiggle at a time.
| |||
Nooks & Crannies[] |
15 day streak | |
NA |
These caves stretch out in many different directions, reminding me of Tacin tendrils, and the cave I'm in now is the beginning of all the pathways. I think I'll give myself 15 days to explore. That should let me see if there are any buried treasures or rare items nearby. And even if I find nothing, I'll know I've looked.
| |||
Colorful, Vibrant Hallucinations[] |
4,500 words |
I found more Gliva the other day, a whole batch of them camping out near a small trickle of water dripping down the rough, cold walls. With all the other creatures eating the caps, this could be a source of food down here... even if that fishy smell doesn't make me hungry. A good snack should be 15 Gliva caps.
| |||
100 Minds to Explore[] |
50,000 words |
Vafire are plentiful in the cave and when observing, I've discovered that each one tends to act a little differently from the others. One sniffs the air longer, another steps with their left leg first, and yet another licks the spot between their eyes. I'm going to defeat 100 of them to see if there's a pair similar in differences.
| |||
Bridge for the Future[] |
NA |
There's a lot to explore in this cave system and for any future Dust Warriors that ends up here, I'd like to make it a bit easier for them to move around... and the best thing I can think to build would be a bridge for easy access to the highest area. It's a great spot for sleeping and observing.
| |||
Stone Cavern Path[] |
1,500 Words (if you have the items) |
After waking up and having a weird shadow here telling me to go fight something out of sight...? I'm going to pass on that. I need to figure out what happened and try to wrap my head around this... Whatever this is! I just need a little bit of time, and if that weird shadow doesn't follow me, that'll be best.
| |||
I Am the Night[] Unlocked after main quest 1: Meet the Shadow |
3,000 words |
These caves are dim, drafty, and I dread finding out where the noises are coming from. It doesn't help that there are at least 20 Tacin flapping about in here, distracting me. If I can defeat them all, that should help the noise settle back into nothingness, and then I'll be able to focus on my surroundings a bit more.
| |||
Crab Claw Clack[] Unlocked after main quest 1: Meet the Shadow |
2,500 words |
Stone on stone means there are Chio scuttling about on the cave floor and that the resulting echoes are horrible. Looking at the dancing group, if I defeat 25, the rest will run off somewhere and leave me to my thoughts. It might also be helpful to give them bones to hold, so they don't clack their claws at me.
| |||
Fuzzy Cave Pillows[] Unlocked after main quest 2: Talk with Shadow |
7,500 words |
I'm going to tackle some of the Attwo in here, but to be honest it's less of a fight and more of trying to shoo them away from where I lay down. They've been cuddling up next to me when I sleep and a little later it's too hot. I'll just need to keep an eye out for those claws...
| |||
Dry Stale Air[] Unlocked after main quest 3: Sharpening Stubborn Stones |
4,750 words |
The air here has a tendency to become stale after a while, then freshen up (which leads me to believe there are holes in the ceiling above). Nevertheless, Tacin and Fosfa flying about means that the air is even drier... I'm going to defeat several of them and see if that'll help dampen the dust and improve the air's quality.
| |||
A Bone to Pick[] Unlocked after main quest 4: Discuss with Shadow |
17,000 words |
One material that is plentiful down here are bones, and I think that if I can snag a few longer and smaller ones, I'll be able to go fishing in the pond. Sakot can usually be found by bones good for making a sturdy pole, and using smaller bones from a Letos, I could make hooks... hmm... this might work...
| |||
Fighting Fallen Soldiers (1/2)[] Unlocked after main quest 5: It was Like Lightning |
Unlocks Fighting Fallen Soldiers (2/2) |
27,670 words |
Thanks to Gormist and Olanat, I don't feel alone down here and the skeletons seem happy enough to help me train (at the least, they keep attacking). Fighting them 10 times each will be a good start to seeing where I can improve. Olanat's very good at throwing the shattered remains of their sword, and Gormist excels in duel-wielding weapons.
| |||
Fighting Fallen Soldiers (2/2)[] Unlocked after Fighting Fallen Soldiers (1/2) |
55,340 words |
Onto the next level of practice; defeating Olanat and Gormist 20 times each. I'm starting to be a lot better at blocking sharp edges (thankfully), but my reflexes still need improvement (even if that's helping me become better at bandaging the minor wounds I'm collecting). If I can dodge a bone though, I'm sure I can dodge thrown sword bits.
| |||
Submerged Spikey Swim (1/2)[] Unlocked after main quest 6: Speak with Shadow |
Unlocks Submerged Spikey Swim (2/2) |
13,200 words |
There's a small pond in the cave, and with the older beings in here, it might be a good idea to swim around and see if there's anything useful under the surface. This does mean I'll be defeating Letos, Ulos, and Spina, but as a bonus, I'll be able to wash my clothes at the same time. It's a win-win-win!
| |||
Submerged Spikey Swim (2/2)[] Unlocked after Submerged Spikey Swim (1/2) |
33,500 words |
I've defeated the creatures that first swarmed me when I went swimming in the pond, but now they've multiplied, and there are a lot more Letos, Ulos, and Spina coming at me. I see something dark in the water behind them, half-buried in the pale sand, so if I can make my way through them there might be something new.
| |||
Leatherbacks of the Cave[] Unlocked after main quest 7: Dam the Guilt |
6,000 words |
The Kohej that inhabit this cave continue to sniff around looking for me, and I'm feeling confident enough to see if I can defeat 3 of them. The toughest part is going to be finding the best way to fight them, especially since they like throwing heavy objects at me. I wonder if I can exhaust one, and then fight?
| |||
A prize for myself (2/2)[] |
12,000 words (if you have the items) |
I need to challenge myself to keep growing, to keep getting stronger, to keep pushing. There's nothing larger in here than the Kohej, so they are my next challenge. If I'm victorious I'll carve my own bone mask as a reminder of the strength I had to persevere. A strength I found in the darkness of the cave, away from the awards and recognition of the rest of the world. A prize, for myself.
| |||
Reflections for Improvement[] Unlocked after main quest 8: The Final Fight |
17,776 words | |
Staring at my reflection has gotten to be easier over the past, and the time has come for me to stop staring. Improving ourselves is never easy, and it can be much harder than first thought, but I need to see this as a chance to be a better me, learning from my experiences, strengths and weaknesses alike. And grow.

Keep in mind that Cave Mushrooms become an important resource in upcoming areas, so you might want to keep a lot of them in your inventory. New sources for them eventually become available, which makes getting the shop rewards easier.
